Contribution
This paper is concerned with the social, emotional and intellectual processes involved in writing an exegesis at doctoral level. In this particular case the exegesis covered a diverse range of publications spanning a twelve year period, the majority of which had not been written with a PhD in mind. The author’s struggle with internalised prejudice about the worth, validity and equivalence of a PhD by publication was eventually overcome through the process of writing the exegesis. This paper will identify key stages, challenges and support structures en route to producing the exegesis including the role of the academic mentor in helping the author to ‘just do it’.
