MC SES 13, Civic Knowledge, Attitudes, and Engagement among Students, SERS
Symposium
Contribution
The ICCS European module investigated students’ civic knowledge in a European context as well as their attitudes, perceptions, and behaviours in relation to European civic issues, institutions, and policies. Slovak students achieved well above the European ICCS average (529 vs. 514) and proved strong support to further expansion of the EU and the EURO zone (one of the three highest scale scores). Slovak students show positive attitudes toward European citizenship and identity, 97% of them agreed or strongly agreed that they felt European. Most of Slovak students consequently supported the general right of free movement for citizens within the European Union to live, work, and travel anywhere in Europe. However, a number of students expressed support for some specific restrictions on the movement of citizens in Europe. In Slovakia those most restriction supportive students were students from rural areas, e.g. villages up to 3000 inhabitants (60% vs. 44% in urban areas). This finding opens questions how different are populations of students attending urban and rural schools in Slovakia, focusing on one of the two different types of schools providing education of the target group on both areas. The aim of the paper is to search o and describe the differences.
