Contribution
Evaluation study conducted in 2009 pertained to estimation of effects of teaching of Civil Education. The evaluation was carried out on representative sample of pupils and teachers in elementary and secondary schools in Serbia (1030 students from elementary and 925 form secondary schools, 301 teachers). Considering that eight years passed since the introduction of this course to schools, a need emerged for evaluation of quality of contents and methods of teaching, as well as for check of its effects on the level of knowledge and general political culture of pupils. The study showed that students are generally satisfied with what they learned in Civic education. However; less than a third of students agreed that Civic education helped to understand that the individual engagement is essential for social change, critical approaches to social events and to interpret political developments. The attitude of young people towards the European integration as one of the key social and political issues in Serbia shows that about 50% of the students as much or very much support the idea of Serbian EU integration, while 15-16% of students voted against it. The paper is analysing the rationale, background and location of those two groups of pupils.
