03 SES 07 A, ESD-Relevant Content in Transitional Countries’ Compulsory Education: a Comparative Perspective
Symposium
Contribution
Framework curricula, selected subject curricula and selected textbooks of 9 years of compulsory schooling in Sarajevo Canton in Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H) were analyzed regarding the education for sustainable development (ESD) with the aim of mapping present ESD content and evaluating its contribution to sustainable development. The research shows that framework and subject curriculum development was not done in accordance with sustainable development principles; in particular, economic elements were under-represented. After the 92-95 war, the country was left with deep ethnic, religious and political divisions. Hence it is not surprising that general education goals in B&H speak of respecting others and respecting differences, and aim to promote tolerance and solidarity among communities in B&H. The study confirms that values of respect and responsibility have the highest presence in the framework curricula. This could also account for lack of focus on ESD elements. Although the results show that curricula give a lot of attention to the nature conversation aspect of ESD, there is space for improvement even in this aspect; for example, there is no mention of renewable energy sources.
