04 SES 13 B, Ten Years After: A History of Roma School Desegregation in Central and Eastern Europe
Symposium
Contribution
The paper gives an overview of Roma community involvement as a key player in the desegregation process. In exploring the development of desegregation policies an important place to start is by considering the approaches to segregation at the community level as reflected through Roma advocacy and the human rights NGOs activity as this has been a key catalyst for change. Activism at a grassroots level and developing different models for desegregation has also played an important part in challenging segregation by creating inclusive quality education. Taba will make reference to a range of good practice initiatives and lessons learned and their contributions to raising desegregation in the public agenda. The paper argues that Romani parents have a crucial role in desegregation especially in litigation actions through what has proved for many of those involved to be a long and arduous process
