17 SES 14, Challenging Democracy Education as a Political Tool in the Conflict between Democracy and Totalitarianism, 1900-2000
Symposium
Contribution
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, discussions have been going on in the post-Soviet space about "genuine and full" democratic education. The representatives of the generation that obtained their education or worked as educators in the Soviet system are active participants in this discussion. Naturally, memories about their experiences under totalitarian rule have an impact on their views on education nowadays. These memories help to disclose the informal story about education in the Soviet Union and provide evidence of the current educational processes in the democratic state, since the choice what to remember and how to remember is also determined by the present situation in society. In the last decade, several studies have been carried out in Latvia on teachers' memories of the Soviet occupation in the 20th century (1940 – 1941, 1945 – 1991). We intend to use these studies to provide answers to several questions: Which features of education in the totalitarian regime are nowadays regarded as negative, and which are rated as positive? Where, how and why do contradictions appear in the views concerning education in the Soviet Union? What do the memories about totalitarianism imply about the present state of education in the democratic system?
