Symposium
Contribution
Claparède, physician and psychologists, placed the Institute that he founded in 1912 under the heading of Rousseau. Pedology, pedagogy, educational science(s), child psychology, and functional education: the names became entangled in the writings of those who argued in favor of the necessity to build this “First Temple entirely Dedicated to Childhood.” Were these names interchangeable? And was it possible to make them live together under the patronage of Rousseau? This seems quite doubtful if one observes the equivocations about terminology and the theoretical controversies among the founders of educational sciences; our analyses based on many sources from the archives of the beginning 20th century confirm the doubts. Nonetheless, over and above all these confusions, and perhaps even thanks to them, everything happened as if the contradictions could coexist under the aegis of the lively philosopher. Claparède and his first companions had contributed to this plebiscite strongly in claiming this lineage, with subtle arguments that were nonetheless paradoxical. Our analysis are based on voluminous archives that relate the intellectual activity of the Institut Rousseau and of the terminological, epistemological, and conceptual reflections of its protagonists – Claparède, Ferrière, Piaget – whom we have revisited through their references to Rousseau.
