Contribution
In the first half of the twentieth century, Barcelona experienced the most violent period of its history, during which it became known as “La ciudad de las Bombas” with more than 800 victims only between 1919 and 1923. Research so far has focused almost exclusively on the violence between workers and entrepreneurs. The reasons for the bloodshed during that time, however, not only consisted of the class conflict, but also of the political struggles as well as of the ethnical tensions between Spaniards and Catalans. Additionally, it was already noticed by the contemporaries that most of the perpetrators were young men. Taking these matters of fact into account, it seems rather strange that the students in Barcelona and their role during the bloody conflicts never have been thoroughly investigated. Therefore, this paper intends to show in which way the students were involved in the urban struggles and to which extend they contributed to the high degree of violence the city experienced during that time.
