10 SES 14 D, Social Networking Sites - What are the Challenges for Educators?
Symposium
Discussant: Jari Multisilta
Contribution
The presentation describes how teacher education has prepared student teachers in two Finnish universities to use ICT in teaching. The presentation also describes how Finnish teachers are supported to find their role in social media. The data of students teachers was collected in 2010. In the survey (n=454) there were also questions about social media. Results revealed that new teachers had only very little or not at all guidance to how to use social media in teaching and learning. In last two years also many Finnish teachers had contacted with the national Ethical Council of Teaching Profession and asked guidelines why, how and when to use social media in teaching. The Council wanted to response to teachers’ needs but not to give detailed norms for teachers’ practices. It invited a group of experts to reflect on and write from different angles what social media is in teachers’ work and what kinds of ethical viewpoints it consists of. The book explores on teachers’ role and ethical responsibilities, legal viewpoints, good practices of social media in schools and media’s role in youngsters’ lives. In the ECER symposium teachers’ comments on the book will also be presented.
