Contribution

The paper is part of a PhD project, where I focus on  sex education in the family. The objective of the conference presentation is to inform about the findings of the project established so far, with focus on subject of sex education in the family from mothers’ point of view. The research questions are as following:

What´s subject of sexual education in the family?

What topics are discussed?

Which topics mothers consider important?

The concept of the sex education is understood differently across the EU. There are two points of view  - a wider concept and a narrower concept. From narrower concept perspective sex education is only preparation for sexual life. Family education is superior to preparation for sex life. The current understanding tends to be rather wider as it is more coherent and complex than the narrower concept. In the wider view, the sex education is superior to family education. It is viewed not only as preparation for sexual life of individuals, but also covers the topic of interpersonal and family relationships. It teaches young people sexual responsibility. But it also takes into account the psychological and psychosexual problems arising from each partner relationship. So from its nature, it is superior to family education.

According to Trojan (2009) family is the most natural environment for sexual education. Parents are one of the main socialization actors of sexuality of their chidlren (Christopher, 2001, DeLamater, 1989). Parents are the best source of sexual education for their children because they can educate them along with love and other value (Trojan, 2009). Family is at the same time first source for their children in this topic.

The research suggest  (Fisher, 2004, King and Lorusso, 1997)  that parents would like to be primary  source of sexual education for their children, but at the same time it is evident, that parents avoid sexual topics like their children. According to Steinberga a Monohana (2011) communication od parents and children about sexual topics is important aspect sexual socialization of their children.

Method

We have chosen qualitative research method for research project. Main research method is in-depth interview with mothers. The interviews were contacted individually. Data are analyzed on the sample 30 mothers. Additional method of data collection is observation in the family. Terrain filed notes were taken during collecting data. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed (open-coding). Analytical software ATLAS.ti was used. The population varies as to domicile address, education of parents, number of children, religion.

Expected Outcomes

The research is in the stage of analysis of data from semi-structured interviews. Now we can see that mothers focus on prevention of sexual diseases, pregnancy prevention and physical and sexual violence prevention. Mothers differenciate sexual topics according to the sex of their children.
