Post-graduate education is regulated according to Graduate Education and Faculty Regulations under 65th item of Act No. 2547 prepared by Interuniversity Board (YOK, 1981). Post-graduate education is composed by post-graduate programs that can be performed in M.SC., Ph.D., and art levels. According to the 22nd item of Act No. 2547 of Higher Education Act, faculty members have duties such as accepting students on specific days, assisting them on several subjects, advising them according to the targets and main principles of this law and provide guidance. In addition to these duties, faculty members help to educate scientists via M.SC. and Ph.D. programs. Faculty members also serve on the University councils. Administrative and academic tasks such as, investigation, advising student, distribution of the physical spaces, evaluation of the work for a task assignment or promotion, arbitration/evaluation of colleagues’ academic works, can also be mentioned as other duties of faculty members (Aypay, 2006). Utilization of guidance is an approach that was proposed to increase the success of post-graduate students (Ku, Lahman, Yeh & Cheng, 2008). Although there is not a consensus about the definition of counselor, he/she can be seen as a teacher, administrator, instructor or coach (Ku, Lahman, Yeh & Cheng, 2008). In recent years, consultancy became a subject attracting scientific attention especially in corporate and academic environments (Paglis, Green & Bauer, 2006). A literature scanning reveals the existence of many researches about this subject (Cohen, 1995; Crisp & Cruz, 2009; Ellison & Dedrick, 2008; Rose, 2003; Rose, 2005; Paglis, Green & Bauer, 2006; Ku, Lahman, Yeh & Cheng, 2008). Academic counseling can be defined as a process where students are assisted to form their educational goals and to develop the methods needed to reach these goals. (Harrison, 2009:229, trs. Dağlı, Kasalak, Turan and Güzelbayram, 2011). Academic counselor has important duties and responsibilities for post-graduate education process. Rose (2005) insisted that the most important two things that counselors can do for the students are open and effective communication and providing trustworthy feed-back. Students may encounter some academic and psychological problems at the beginning of their post-graduate education. Thus, they need counselors who; will support them, will contribute in their academic development, will increase their success and who has proficiency on different aspects.
