Symposium
Contribution
Gymnastics as first form of physical education was introduced in Swiss schools along the 19th century. New school-subject meant trained teachers to teach it. The lack of preparation of primary school teachers became, with the absence of specific equipment and construction for gymnastics, the main obstacle to its introduction. This situation brought about the appearance of a new profession: gymnastics teachers. Opportunities for individual who wanted to earn their living as gym teachers increased, but sometimes required to be mobile, at national or international level. It appeared that the history of first Swiss teachers of physical education was connected with the traditional big neighbours: Germany and France, but also with less expected countries such as Sweden or Bulgaria e.g. Mobile teachers or educators were “vehicles” of transnational transfers. The material for this analysis was drawn from my PhD research study and especially from a collective biography of dozens of individuals based on archival data. This contribution seeks to identify these transnational paths, and the reasons of this mobility, and to question how this mobility affected the development of gymnastics in Switzerland or in other countries, and when we can talk of transfer of practice/knowledge between two or more national fields.
