Over the last few years professional development of Teachers has received increasing attention in educational research. Expressions such as teacher development, staff development, continuing teacher education, professional development, continuous education, etc can be found in the literature in this field. In fact, there are different perspectives concerning this issue that requires a clear conceptualization of this process. This paper seeks to discuss this issue in the light of the recent innovations introduced in Portugal concerning teacher education by analysing the following questions: - What is the purpose of continuing teacher education? - What are the needs of the teachers concerning their professional development? - How do teachers learn? What are the activities that facilitate teachers' learning...? - What are the major factors that affect the professional development of Teachers?
