Contribution
This paper reviews literature on school leadership and quality assurance in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, England and the USA. It addresses consequences of the dramatic increase in diversity and complexities of headship, especially in relation to financial and personnel management and to evaluation and quality control. Drawing upon case studies of schools involved in experiments in self-evaluation and internal, colleague-based quality assurance strategies, it explores attempts to share responsibilities and foster communication both within the schools, and with their environments.
