Contribution
This paper will explore the changing role of principals in a context of 'downsizing' and 'lean teaching' in Swedish schools and in relation to the increasing proportion of female principals in post. The research will investigate the extent to which the principals are reactive to external mandates and the extent to which they see themselves as shaping and developing their schools. It will explore meanings of interaction, of 'acting in context' and of managing change, concentrating on how dilemmas are conceptualised and resolved and how this influences self- identities and personal practical theories.
