In most European countries teacher training includes writing a professional dissertation or thesis. A professional dissertation aims to make future teachers capable of taking a critical stand towards their own practice, to formulate and resolve professional problems. Elaborating a written text is in itself a powerful dynamo for a reflective look back on practices. But we have the hypothesis that the conditions of tutoring are a determining factor: will it be a mere scholastic exercise or an element which helps the individual to adopt the stance of a reflective practitioner, to find the right distance between action and a critical perspective on that action ? In this symposium we shall ask the question through a comparative study of the situation in several countries: Britain, France, Italy, Portugal and Sweden.
