Contribution
This paper explores the development and practices of professional judgement sited within a particular sphere of expressive culture, that of musical performance in Higher Education. An account of the case study and the key findings from the research will be presented and then analysed. The analysis evokes questions with reference to major issues arising from the themes, understandings and practices of power and from current debates concerning the development and practices of professional judgement in other professions, particularly health and teacher training. The relationship between current competence- based certification for teachers and professional cultures and practices as identified in the case study, will be discussed.
