Contribution
The paper reports research with professional artists investigating their responses to a major collection of art, making available their thought processes in creating new work informed by their experience in the galleries. The research opened to scrutiny the complex relationships between response and creativity; between past and new experiences, in the artists' making of new art. The place in the development and use of professional knowledge was explored with the artists. Our intention was to investigate the problematic nature of 'the artist as researcher' and requirements in school art curriculum practice faced by teachers. Both issues were treated as problematic by the researchers, and their problems 'exposed' through the study of occupational practice.
