23 SES 13 D, Educating Europeans? Mobilisation as Education? Paradoxes and Contradictions of the Politics of Education through Europe
Symposium
Contribution
This paper discusses the normative demands, inherent to the idea of “European Education” and the conflicts of educating European educators in the tension of globalization and localization and universalization and specification. Starting from the assumption that the political demand of building Europe by education is a result of the global economization of education and the universalization of educational institutions the focus will then turn to the discourse on education in Europe. While the first part can be systematized by the dualism of universalization and specification globalisation and localization, it will then be asked about the fields of power (Jullien), which structure education in Europe. Thus education in Europe can be seen as a space of possibilities to be developed, while this development implies taking on a position within the discourse on the relation of Europe and education. How is it possible to educate people so that they take on professional roles in education systems under the condition of Europeanization? The theoretical approach will be illustrated by the example of a MA program on ‘Education in Europe’. How can such programs make ‘Bildung’ possible in a professional way facing the increasing hybridity in education contexts?
