This paper reports on a study based on empirical research in a Danish context. This study is part of a larger project called NQTs’ Possibilities to get a Foothold in a Lifelong Career. The project involves a so-called monitoring group consisting of experts from the Independent School Teachers’ Union, the Headmaster Association (head of the administration association for the area), the Ministry of Education, the Research Ministry, and the Danish Evaluation Institute. We examined how, and to what extent, are Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) in Denmark supported during the first three years of their professional life? In this paper we report on the findings from a survey investigation of newly qualified teachers´ work conditions from a teacher perspective as well as from a management perspective. While we were sensitive to the Danish context when analysing our findings we also paid attention to international research, particularly research conducted in Europe, to help us explore our research results. The survey was designed following a literature review, close scrutiny of the TALIS report (OECD, 2013), a report from the Danish Evaluation Institute (Evalueringsinstitut, 2011), and an evaluation of graduate teachers from a teacher education perspective (Lunde Frederiksen Lund Hansen, J., Steensen, J., 2010, Lunde Frederiksen, 2010). We will present the most pertinent results from the survey and discuss how the NQTs’ perspectives have informed an initiative taking place in collaboration with a Danish municipality to develop and test of a Danish induction programme. This prototype will be tested with a cohort of new teachers who will be invited to take part in further research.
