Symposium
Contribution
In this paper we report on some of the findings from a research project in Denmark about how, and to what extent, are Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) supported during the first three years of their professional life? We will explore the data from five qualitative focus groups which were analysed to develop a prototype of a teacher induction programme. We found that focus groups were a useful method of data collection because, when combined with other approaches, it can provide more complex data than, for example a survey or individual interview. This method gives the NQTs the possibility to inspire each other, discuss and comment on their practice – which only they know from the inside (Halkier, 2010). The group setting encourages the NQTs to reflect more and form more sophisticated answers. The data is, therefore, influenced by the context and by group dynamics (Damgaard, 2016). Five focus groups, with 6-8 participants in each, will take place in February 2017, and the moderator will facilitate this with both general and specific questions. The questions are inspired by the themes: descriptions and experiences of being a Newly Qualified Teacher; career development; and revitalization. The focus group data will be analysed using the thematic analysis method as suggested by Braun and Clark (2006). At the symposium we will present our findings from the focus groups. By the time of the symposium, our research results will have been used to develop a preliminary prototype for a Danish induction programme, which we will also present at the symposium. The research design and methods which were used could be performed in other European countries and, in so doing, contextual differences could be elucidated.
