Contribution
In my contribution I deal with the impact of digital information on education, starting from the perspective that all education is always materiality preconditioned and corporally embedded. Thus, according to Stiegler (1998) education today faces radically new possibilities as well as dangers. He states that “deep attention” closely connected to the process of alphabetization today is replaced by new forms of attention, viz. constant alertness and vigilance. This might according to Stiegler have detrimental effects on the way in which the future generations will become formed as subjects, respectively in view of the possibility to raise a critical voice against the infiltration of a capitalist logic in all thinkable aspects of individual and societal life. Burbules´ (2004) far more positive analysis assesses new pedagogical technologies solely in function of the opportunities for “immersion” they offer. I try to show that the discussion between Stiegler´s and Burbule´s points of view should be held on another level, as they do not bring into discussion the normative conception of education (and the body´s role within it) into play. If education is considered to be intrinsically an educational affair, then Stiegler´s analysis might be pursued in another way.
