Contribution
Social science research on rural issues of schooling is at risk. In Nordic countries research in this field seems to a very limited degree to be the basis of decisions about rural schooling. Small rural schools seem to become marginalized. What are concepts of schooling in local communities? The theoretical perspectives – both the researcher‘s theory from above and outside and ‘native’ theory and categories mediated from below from people inside the place, grounded theory – act as a guide about what to pay attention to, what challenges to expect and how to analyse relationships between concepts and variables in order to understand and explain the relationship between place and education. This paper explores issues, possibilities and challenges related to the use of theory and concepts in research on rural schools and their communities – place based or placeless? More concretely grounded in the perspectives of explanatory empirically based theory, I will present three meaning tables or typologies from my own comparative research studies of rural schools and places.
