Developing Sustainability at ECERs over the years
In 2015 ECER and EERA started to take green and sustainable issues into consideration. Since then we have worked closely with each year’s local organisers to implement as many sustainability measures as possible, always according to the conditions at the different locations.
When we started, sustainability was only seen from an environmental and resource-saving perspective. Nowadays, sustainability is seen much broader, also covering socio-economic issues, such as avoiding very low wages, gender pay gap, child labour etc. For example: when contracting, it is not seen as fully sustainable if you get recycled paper from a company if they pay very low wages or don’t respect workplace safety.
We have recently developed a checklist for ECER's local organisers with recommendations and possible measures, in accordance with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. For more information, see https://ec.europa.eu/international-partnerships/sustainable-development-goals_en
We know that local organisers are not able to realise each and every measure we suggest, as the local conditions vary a lot with each new venue we go to. However, we ask them to take our checklist into consideration, and to do as much as they can.

This Year's Highlights of the Sustainability Measures
We are happy to inform you that the local organisers were able to realise the majority of our suggestions for ECER 2024. You will understand that we are not able to share all the measures that could be realised, on the one hand because the list would be very long, on the other hand because they are subject to data protection. Here is a selection of the highlights:
- Newly built low energy university buildings with green rooves, all offering renewable energy options and various accessibility features.
- On Campus, all waste bins offer waste separation, so that recycling can be done when possible.
- Conference programme is only available digitally, reducing the amount of paper considerably.
- For accessibility reasons, it is necessary to offer a Venue Booklet, but we managed to keep it as compact as possible, with only the map in coloured printing.
- We introduced QR codes for check-in and for the programme sheets on each session door, also reducing printed pages.
- The Conference Give Away will allow all participants to use the water dispensers. (We still offer PET bottles with the pre-ordered lunches, to make sure each participant gets enough to drink in the expected heat, also during the lunch break).
- The single use cups and other items at coffee breaks are bio-degradable.
- A box will be available near Local Help Desk to return your name badge holder and/or lanyard for recycling purposes.
- Food leftovers will be offered to selected charities.
- Food is regional and seasonal, and vegetarian options are widely avaiable. Other dietary requirements such as vegan, gluten free etc are also covered.
- The shuttle buses organised for the ECER participants reduce the need for them to travel to the venue by rented cars.
