Sephardic Traces tour in Belgrade

This route highlights the most significant landmarks of the historical, artistic, cultural, and linguistic heritage of the Sephardic community that has lived in Belgrade since the 16th century. Spanning four and a half kilometers and comprising twenty-eight marked locations, the route extends from the Cervantes Institute to the banks of the Danube River, near the "Burning Menorah" monument by Nandor Glid. Along the way, visitors will encounter important sites such as the Beth Israel Synagogue, originally built in 1907 and tragically destroyed during the Second World War—now the site of the Gallery of Frescoes. The route also includes the location of a former ritual bath (mikveh), demolished in 1939 (Thessaloniki Street No. 11), as well as the historic Sephardic store “Soko,” known for selling bread and dairy products in the early 20th century (Cara Dušana Street No. 32). Other notable stops include the “Robni magazin,” Belgrade’s first department store, constructed in 1907 by a Sephardic architect and owner (Kralja Petra Street No. 16), several residences of prominent Sephardic families, and numerous other traces reflecting the lasting presence and contributions of the Sephardic community in Belgrade.
