Vilnius

Since the time of Grand Duke Gediminas, whose letters of 1323 first mention the city, Vilnius has been a meeting place of cultures, languages, and ideas. Situated at the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers, the city grew into the historical capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and developed as an important political, economic, and intellectual centre of the region. Over the centuries, Vilnius has been shaped by diverse cultural traditions, creating a unique multicultural heritage that continues to define the city today.

The city's historic centre, one of the largest surviving medieval old towns in Northern Europe, is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its winding streets, hidden courtyards, and impressive churches showcase Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical architecture, while its vibrant cultural life reflects a dynamic blend of history and innovation. Today, Vilnius is known as one of Europe's greenest capitals, with nearly half of its area covered by parks, forests, and green spaces, making nature easily accessible from the city centre.

Home to around 600,000 residents, Vilnius is a modern European capital with a thriving academic, cultural, and technology sector. It has earned international recognition for its quality of life, walkability, and creative atmosphere, while preserving the charm of a compact city where most attractions are within easy walking distance. Cafés, museums, galleries, and public spaces create an inviting environment for both visitors and residents, and the city's lively cultural calendar offers something year-round.

As the host city of the EERA Summer School 2027, Vilnius offers an inspiring setting to reflect on the meaning and impact of educational research. Combining centuries of intellectual tradition with an open, innovative, and welcoming spirit, the city provides an ideal environment for learning, exchanging ideas, and building lasting international connections.
