Founded in 1579 by King Stephen Báthory, Vilnius University is the oldest and largest university in Lithuania and one of the oldest universities in Central and Eastern Europe. Established during the Renaissance as the intellectual centre of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the University has played a pivotal role in the scientific, cultural, and social development of the region for more than four centuries. Throughout its history, Vilnius University has fostered generations of scholars, scientists, and public figures, while preserving its commitment to academic excellence, critical inquiry, and the pursuit of knowledge.
Today, Vilnius University is Lithuania's leading research university, bringing together a vibrant international academic community across a broad range of disciplines. As a member of the Coimbra Group and the ARQUS European University Alliance, it actively contributes to addressing global challenges through interdisciplinary research, innovation, and collaboration. Combining centuries-old academic traditions with a forward-looking approach to education and research, the University remains committed to academic freedom, social responsibility, and the creation of knowledge that benefits society.
