Jo is Professor of Sociolinguistics at the University of Warwick; Visiting Distinguished Professor at Aalto University School of Business, Finland; Erskine Fellow at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand; and Fellow at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Belgium. She combines a highly cited research profile, comprising more than 130 publications, with a strong commitment to education and extensive policy influence. Jo is Editor-in-chief of Discourse and Communication and Subject Chair for Linguistics, Language, Communication and Media on the Scopus board. She has published extensively on Leadership, Risk, Decision Making and Pedagogic Innovation as well as Research Methodology. Teaching and learning have always been central to Jo’s work, both within her areas of expertise and through her senior leadership roles. As a National Teaching Fellow and Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, she is dedicated to pedagogic innovation and global citizenship education. Her vision for learner empowerment focuses on creating the conditions and support for students to take ownership of their learning and to develop a clear voice and a global outlook through their higher education journey. In 2026, Jo was elected to the prestigious Academia Europaea.
