Results of OECD PISA 2006 again show that students’ achievement depends on socioeconomic status of their families. The compensation level of negative circumstances influencing achievement differs from one education system to other, as well as from one school to other. Despite of relatively good average results in Latvia compared to other PISA countries in the above mentioned issue it is obvious that influence of socioeconomic status on student achievement differs from school to school in Latvia – we can observe different students’ achievement from schools with similar average socioeconomic status. The aim of the proposed report is to find factors affecting increase of student achievement from schools with lower socioeconomic status. Regression analysis of PISA 2006 schools and student questionnaire data (the PISA index of economic, social and cultural status of family - ESCS) and student achievement in science could allows compare the groups of schools with similar socioeconomic status, but different achievement level. In these two groups of schools different student level and school level factors will be compared and possible influence of these factors on student achievement revealed. Comparisons will be performed using correlation calculations and the analysis of the indices and other derived measures from the student and school context questionnaires. Taking into account that different research data (for example, aspects of ICT use at home and at school, etc.) obtained in OECD PISA have a hierarchical structure, it is possible that the individual subjects of study may be classified or arranged in groups which themselves have qualities that influence the study. Application of HLM method to OECD PISA data about different aspects of student and school level indices and student achievement is aimed to shed light on possible influence of factors on students’ achievement in different subject area.
