Background
In most international countries, the changes in the educational systems have a particularly strong impact on the school leader's role. There has been a growth in the attention given to how school leaders are prepared for their role. Nevertheless, even the scope of the best training program is limited. As it is known from research on person-job-fit, training will not help if an individual’s motives, values and interests do not correspond with the requirements of the position he or she is going to hold.
Research and development question
We lack opportunities for teachers to find out whether they fit to the personal demands of the school leadership role. In other fields of career development, self assessments based on psychometric tests have been proven to be helpful. However, such tools are not known in the educational sector, particularly not in the German speaking context.
Method
An online-based self-assessment tool on certain core aspects of school leadership was developed in cooperation with eligo, a German consulting firm specialized on online-based aptitude testing. Based on the requirements of educational leadership positions, suitable testing scales were chosen from the eligo portfolio and adapted to fit the school leadership contexts as well as new testing scales were developed. The pilot study with 400 German participants included 30 testing scales. An evaluation on the experiences of the pilot group was undertaken.
Expected Outcomes
After data analysis, 24 testing scales were included in the tool. Findings on the psychometric measures of the testing scales will be presented as well as the results of the evaluation. Modifications of the tool and possible complementary instruments will be discussed. Moreover, strengths and weaknesses of the use of the instrument for various purposes will be critically summarized.
