The link among metacognition, problem solving and new technologies appears to be well established in literature. However, the role of cooperation in such a context still requires more investigation.
Using a narrative approach to work on such aspects is a promising methodology, since self-explanation appears to be a key element in promoting metacognition in problem solving.
We decided to focus on blogs in our investigation, using them as an ecological setting for self-regulated learning: we hypothesised that blogs can promote metacognitive awareness and foster more effective problem solving strategies.
An experimental study was devised enrolling a sample of 106 university students. They were split into four experimental group. All groups were asked to solve a problem – i.e. to solve a mystery specifically designed for the research: Blog group, Forum group, E-mail group and Control. At the end of the experiment, all participants were asked to fill in a questionnaire about metacognitive awareness.
In assessing metacognitive awareness, the kind of solution, time-on-task, the number and type of strategies employed and the use of mental verbs were taken into account.
