The language of international policy is not English, but English as a Foreign Language. The use of English in the global economy and in European education policy implies that language is now less important because we can all speak the international language and therefore can all understand each other. This paper explores a number of issues to do with language and translation that arise in a university setting. Here translation is considered first in its literal sense, of moving one from language to another, and two cases are discussed: the first looks at the experience of non-English speaking students and their experiences of translation, and the second considers translation in relation to native English speaking students. Other ways of thinking of translation are then introduced which draw attention to the ways in which translation occurs within a language as well as between languages; the assumption that translation is a technical matter hides the fact that language is unstable.

Expected Outcomes

The aim of the paper is to offer a more radical philosophical analysis of current European, national and institutional strategies that promote the internationalisation of higher education
