The rapid development and change of working life is putting pressure on education centres today. Cycles of change in work organizations are becoming shorter and the change processes are increasingly complex. These change processes call for a new type of learning: expansive learning in which the practitioners jointly analyze the causes of problems in their work practice and create through experimentation a new model for their activity (Y. Engeström). Adulta, studied in this paper, is one of Finland's largest adult education centres. Adulta employs a full- time staff of 180 persons. It's training is tailored to meet the needs of private companies and public institutions. Adulta's main areas of operation are business training, management, electronics and information technology, multimedia and graphics, tv and media, metalwork, construction, as well as hotel, restaurant, and catering services. Adulta acts as training center for Finnish Broadcasting Company. In Adulta, the training work can be organised in a new way. What is needed is a new working method which encounter better customer needs and includes partnership with customers. There is a need for better cooperation between the trainers as well. The new working method that is developed in the change laboratory process is called consulting working method. Consulting working method is a new version of the Change Laboratory method (Y. Engeström). The consulting working method focuses on developing forms of partnership with clients who are buying training and consultancy services from Adulta. Expansive learning in change laboratory involves the creation of new motives, learning and changing work practices. This study examines the content and quality of the consulting working method and collaboration between the trainers. Research themes studied in this paper includes, firstly, the trainers' planning of consulting working method and implementation of it. Secondly, the purpose is to study the co-planning between the trainers and customers in order to produce the educational and consulting products based on customer needs. Activity theory and developmental work research (DWR) is used to analyse data collected during the laboratory process. A central premise is that the members taking part to the change laboratory themselves represent a central force for genuine innovation and practical solutions.
