The social changes, as a result of building the democracy in Poland, cause also a lot of social conflicts. The aim of this study was to analyze and evaluate the attitudes of Polish youth towards the representatives of different ethnical, national, and religious groups, people perceived as "others". The concept of "other" has been defined as the social group which is different versus the study group in nationality or in religion. The structural theory of the attitude was applied as a theoretical approach in the study. The concept of cognitive component of the attitude was defined as the tendency to stereotype. The concept of affective component of the attitude was defined as tendency to keep a distance toward the object. The concept of behavioral component of the attitude was defined as the tendency to choose the discriminative behaviors toward the representatives of the selected different groups. In addition, in the analysis of the problem of social tolerance, we tried to evaluate the psychosocial determinants, which affect these attitudes. The psychosocial determinants of the social tolerance were divided into two sets: the individual characteristics and demographic factors. The individual factors included the following: self-esteem, others-esteem, ethnocentrism, imperativeness. The demographic factors included: gender, age, place of living, type of the school, parents' education. The study group was combined of two cohorts. There were 15 years olds - pupils of the 1st grade of the secondary school, and 17 years olds - pupils of the 3rd grade of the secondary school. The representative sample of the schools was randomly chosen. There were chosen 2 secondary schools located in the city of Krakow and one secondary school from the medium town - Sanok. In total there were studied about 757 pupils varied by above mentioned demographic variables. There was the survey method was conducted. The self-completion questionnaire with scales was constructed and performed after piloting to measure to for example the imperativeness and tendency to stereotype. More over there was used also the standardized psychological tests such as the Rosenberg Scale, the Social Perception Questionnaire. The results of this study have showed, that both pupils' group characterized by high social status as well as pupils' group characterized by low social status represents the negative attitudes towards the "others", i.e. high level of social intolerance. The practical conclusions from this study regarding the educational recommendation in the field of teaching social tolerance among youth are as following:· To develop the skills of the adequate perception of self and others· To develop the awareness and reflection regarding own stereotypes and prejudices· To develop the positive attitudes towards different socio-cultural communities and nationalities · To create the educational situations supporting the development of self and social identity · To promote the culture of tolerance in the schoolsThe educational programs should consider the specific characteristics of the family and school environment. These environmental factors strongly influence the pupils' attitudes of social tolerance.
