This workshop will engage researchers and information providers in a discussion about ways in which information services can be better integrated into the research process. It will take as its focus some experimental activity conducted within the PERINE project, involving the identification and exposure of material on the internet relating to specific research themes suggested by EERA networks. The Pedagogical and Educational Research Information Network for Europe (PERINE) is an EU funded project which seeks to raise awareness among European educational researchers about the resources which exist to support their work. As part of this work the partners have created a multilingual internet resource catalogue which will be presented online for the first time at the ECER 2003. In close cooperation with EERA research networks the PERINE partners have recently focussed on identifying and cataloguing internet resources on four thematic areas, two of which are objectives of this workshop. Two presentations will inform the workshop discussion: Alexander Botte (German Institute for International Educational Research) and Katalin Varga (Hungarian National Library of Education and Museum): 'Presentation of PERINE web resources on the theme "Managing Education''. Elfriede Tajalli (Federal Ministry for Education, Research and Culture, Austria) and Dr. Marisa Trigari (National Institute for Documentation of Educational Innovation and Research, Italy): 'Presentation of PERINE web resources on the theme 'Lifelong Learning". For the purposes of the PERINE exercise "Managing Education" includes 'system-level reform and restructuring at the national and regional levels'; 'the public and the private'; 'developing schools and universities'; 'management profession in education'. Similarly, "Lifelong Learning" includes problems of phasing, the learning environment and social inclusion and exclusion. In each case the presenters will show examples of the results of their internet searches for material on the research theme, demonstrating the multilingual search facility to the database and addressing the principles of the PERINE project and their experiences of working with researchers and information in this innovative way. The presentations will lead to an open discussion about the experiment. Particular consideration will be given to the views of researchers about the potential of resources like the PERINE internet resource catalogue. Such views will inform the further development of the PERINE project during its final funded year culminating in a review at ECER 2004.
