Anyone wanting to know what primary schools should really be like could find no better place to begin than this exciting book... Cotton offers some amazing examples of what can be done to improve not only urban multicultural schools but all primaries...Times Educational Supplement This paper based on Tony Cotton's recent book reviwed above shows how multi-ethnic urban primary schools who underpin their policy and practice with social justice can support all their pupils and meet rigorous government targets. Three schools whose recent insepction reports praised their inclusivity and their constant rise in achievement are analysed to show how this can be done. Using tools such as an 'evaluation walk' Tony works with the voices of headteachers, pupils, teachers, governors and parents and analyses school documents that illustrate the collaborative and egalitarian way in whixch these schools operate. The paper illustrates how the collaborative ethos that characterises them has made each school successful on all counts. They provide models for what community primary schools can be. The book paper explores issues of school vision and mission statements, school development planning, staff management, behaviour policy, attacking racism, schools councils, and assessing achievement - and the involvement of the whole school community in all aspects of what makes the school.
