The workshop draws on the facilitators recent review of current use of IT capabilities for engaging children's creativity with a view to examining the potential for increasing children's access and participation as co-developers of these new mediums of interaction. As well the facilitator will draw upon her own experience of developing and designing one such project, StoryMakers, that used a variety of approaches to encourage children's involvement at each stage of development, production and implementation. This project involved small groups of children aged 8 - 12 from diverse communities across Scotland in using a virtual workshop space enabled by Web CT, a virtual classroom capability designed by the University of Edinburgh to explore traditional story and folklore material and the new uses they could make of them to create their own stories, dialogues and art work.Lankshear and Knobel (2003) Buckingham (2003) as well as well as Holloway and Valentine (2003) note that there is a disparity between the technological capability of IT and its actual uptake by education providers, exacerbated of late by the growing perception of risk. Nevertheless innovations in this area continue to develop. What are the lessons learns about the limitations and potentials of this medium of interaction? What strategies have proven successful to negotiate safe boundaries and provide meaningful content and means of interaction? Are there examples of projects genuinely providing channels of expression and communication for disadvantaged groups? What kind of involvement by children is possible in developing projects? What kinds of changes does this make to the product? There is a growing critique that the trend in pupil, student and youth representative councils initiated by attention the UN Declaration on the Right of the Child generated, tend to benefit a small group of advantaged children in ways that do not distribute this benefit to children more widely. This dynamic is also apparent in concerns raised about the digital divide. The workshop will use the facilitators review of web sites and IT research and a report of developments within the StoryMakers project with which she has worked in order to set the scene for a discussion of the above questions and concerns in which participants own experience of projects will be most welcome.
