The main object of this research is to inform on the efforts and decisions taken by a minority linguistic community to add a cultural identity on educational curriculum. To this end it has been produced a multimedia DVD which uses the minority language used in Biscay, to assess the school curriculum.The Basque language, (euskara in Basque) despite of being one of the oldest languages in Europe and being subject in several studies is full of linguistic unknowns, including its place of origin. Nowadays there are more than 1,000,000 speakers of Basque in the Basque Country area (near the political border of France and Spain), and about 200,000 in many other areas around the world, most of them in America. Thanks to the standardization process of the written Basque, there has been an unquestionable recovery and expansion of the use of the Basque language. But this process has also been accompanied by some negative effects, one of them being the fact that some of the smaller local varieties are disappearing. This is one of the main reasons to collect, structure and make available existing audio material as well as some newly recorded sound archives regarding every local variation. Another point to be considered is the lack of pronunciation rules for the standard. The use of DVD can be a very appropriate guide for new speakers, as well as an invaluable tool for researchers. The standard Basque is learned from primary education to graduate level for some curricula. Basque language is official in the Autonomous Basque Community (Spanish area of the Basque speaking region). It is possible to study in Basque in all levels of education. Primary education curriculum set by the Basque Government has been taken as base on subjects of contents, aims and methodology. From the subjects included in this curriculum "Basque", " Environmental Knowledge", "Mathematics", and "Arts" areas have been the ones chosen for this research. The centre of this exam has been the oral communication.The use of language patterns and the interaction they provide used in the theoretical structure bases created by Goikoetxea, have been the main source of this work. However, as Gaminde and Goikoetxea (2003) suggest, the proposal here shown includes the very important decision of the reason of the use of the Basque language: a language to live with or a language to fulfill some given functions. The DVD includes six different parts, consisting on video, audio and pictures: CONTENT VIDEO AUDIO PICTURES Country 72 75 104 Services 150 91 57 Plants 14 31 50 Animals 13 34 27 Nature 4 13 41 Sky 48 65 79 The audio part includes melodies, songs, animal sounds and records made by an informatics team. The video part consists of pieces of conversations, actions, landscapes and items associated to the country. Picture part displays a gallery of different pictures.The production of this work may resume the following aspects: Theoretical side development, connection of theory and practise, and technical evolution.There has been an approach on theoretical aspect and curriculum facets for nearby environment subjects, for the integration of reference and absorption patterns with the rest of the topics here presented.The technical evolution describes accurately all the problems extracted from the modification related to the point of view evolution from the paper to the multimedia system. The material is one of the most important points, the DVD and the didactical guide which uses the technology to introduce an active methodology.
