Contribution
The overarching ambition with Profkow is to develop understandings about knowledge "at work" and to consider opportunities and constraints for change as well as means to capture issues of social cohesion and integration in Europe today. We have located studies in seven countries belonging to different European welfare state models and we plan to review research on professional knowledge in education and health, to produce life histories of teachers and nurses, to combine these with ethnographic studies of teaching and nursing and to produce a database built on a seven country survey of 15 400 teachers and nurses with a focus on work organisation, authority and expertise in order to describe, analyse and compare the construction and use of professional practical knowledge in different work life settings in Europé and develop a theoretical understanding of professional practical knowledge and work life under restructuring. This first presentation will present the background, aims and main contents of the Profknow initiative.
