Format:
Research Workshop
Session Information
Contribution
The aim of this workshop is to draw together European researchers working in the area of at risk youth in order to pool existing and develop new methodologies for evaluating and tracking the progress of young people involved in school and other interventions aimed at reducing risk and increasing opportunities. The main objectives of the workshop are to: (1) Consider methods used in European research with at risk youth (2) Share and collate information on current methodologies used by European researchers in evaluations with at risk youth (3) Identify gaps in current research methodologies utilised by European researchers in their work with youth at risk (4) Develop new collaborative links between European researchers working in the area of at risk youth The workshop will be interactive. Participants will be invited to share evidence from and outcomes of the use of different methodologies; from standardised tests, to interviews and qualitative procedures. Within the workshop we expect o take an eco-systemic perspective, i.e. from child, parent, school, institutional and policy levels. Evidence will be drawn from, prospective, ongoing and completed work. For example, the three main presenters are developing a collaborative EU project on Inter-agency partnership for improving inclusion of 'at risk' young people in which proposed measures range from standardised developmental measures administered to individual young people to data on systems within which interventions are delivered through to methods designed to gather experiential information. Issues to be addressed in the workshop will include: (1) The appropriateness of measures for different situations and with different sample participants; (2) Ensuring the rigour of methodologies; (3) Potential problems encountered by researchers working with a range of different professionals in schools and between different partnerships and professional services when carrying out research of this kind; (4) Ensuring that participants are represented properly in the design of research with at risk youth, including measures employed (5) Disseminating outcomes of research with at risk youth in meaningful ways in order to impact on future local and national policy developments for at risk youth.
