Results of two studies that relate to ADHD children are discussed. The first study is on the experience of parents of ADHD children in Iceland. Four parents were interviewed and 112 parents answered a questionnaire. The results show that raising an ADHD child is stressful. Parents tend to have negative self image as parents and have worries on behalf of the childs future. Nevertheless they tend to have positive attitudes to their ADHD child. School is important to the parents and they have varied experiences and opinions about school but more parents have positive than negative experiences. Almost half of the parents feel that they have received support from the child's teacher but there are mixed opinions regarding how well school staff is informed about ADHD. The parents also experience lack of initiative from schools and they feel that they have to be their children's advocate in school. The majority of parents have needed to give information regarding ADHD to school staff. Diagnosis of the child seems to be a turning point. It has positive effects on parents; they become more optimistic and blame themselves less. The diagnosis also has positive effect on their cooperation between parents and school staff. The second study is a pilot study in progress on the experience of teachers of ADHD children. A questionnaire will be sent to a sample of elementary school teachers in Iceland. Preliminary results of the study will be discussed and compared to the results of the parents' study.
