This paper will present findings from an ongoing piece of research on the identities of young Kosovan refugees in London. I will comment on the construction of their ethnic and national identity, in particular through the analysis of their language use and patterns of cultural consumption. Observations and conversations show how these adolescents construct their individual and social identities by accessing global resources, especially the Internet, in response to local interests. Through the analysis of the websites they access, as well as of conversations had during and after internet sessions, I aim to show how local and global aspects intertwine in these young people's lives. Interestingly, these young refugees have a conception of 'local' that goes beyond their immediate environment, to encompass both several geographically unconnected places and 'virtual' places they can only access online. Their idea of 'global', on the other hand, is at the same time heavily political and commercial. I argue that the process of construction of their individual and social identities, mediated through electronic media access, has taken a richer and more successful path than that envisaged for them by the currently dominant, marginalising and pathologising discourse on refugees.
