28 SES 12, Europeanization and Educational Knowledge/Practice: Naming and Claiming an Academic Field
Symposium
Contribution
My reflections on the project of Europeanization are situated in the context of German adult education and draw on the experience of European funded research from various perspectives. Against this background I argue that the project of Europeanization can be read as a top down process of flexibilisation and mobilization. If Europe is understood as a multilevel process rather than a targeted project, on which types of knowledge is it drawing, which types of knowledge are produced and what are the challenges for (adult) education? Considering ECER as a space-time for critical reflection about the transformation of knowledge and the transforming practices of knowledge building and following the so called material turn, I will underpin my arguments with a historic perspective on the last 12 ECER conferences, asking about the self-representation of ECER as a knowledge building community in Europe. The changing shape and appearance of conference bags tells a story on its own, which can be read as an illustration/materialization of transforming practices of knowledge building.
