Marginalised young men and women in German schools geared towards low qualifying education (Powell 2003, Solga 2005) need special advice, professional and institutional cooperation and help to adjust themselves within the reality/realities of a globalised economy. But which special advice do they need on the basis of differences in gender and ethnic/cultural background (Phoenix 2006)? And what kind of professional and organisational support do educational institutions and economical businesses need to help young people who face risks as in exclusion on their path of life towards integration in society? In this paper I will present results of my research concerning differences in themes and issues in targeted advice for pupils and their parents in a school-social-work program which was funded and supported by a regional economy network-group. Guiding principles were an intersectional approach to education and empowerment of all persons involved in the transition processes, to support those young people growing up without a system of family coaching or mentoring possibilities, aiming to establish these and to involve them as well as their parents.

Method

Data from group discussions with young adult project participants, interviews with cooperation partners from schools and businesses as well as quantitative data, collected for a year, assessing frequency and topics of consultation contacts with participants as well as their parents by school social workers in cooperating schools were triangulated.

Expected Outcomes

I will present conclusions as to the opportunities such a transition program can offer with regard to the development of schools as well as to shaping towards the employment requirements of companies – results that are relevant not only in Germany but on an European level as well.
