Contribution
In democratic societies school claims to achieve a significant contribution for civic education. The concept of “political education” that involves matters of democratic orientations, freedom of expressions and the ideal of equality are the major principles that are contained in all school subjects. Even though there seems to be a general agreement on these qualities, religious education be it Christian, Muslim or Jewish et cetera obtains a special role.
This presentation is especially concerned with Muslim teachers attitudes towards a successful integration of Muslim students into Austrian society. In doing so, these attitudes are compared with a sample of Non-Muslim teachers and their beliefs and expectations. Furthermore this paper tries do identify if and how these attitudes and beliefs differ between teachers of religion (Muslim and Christian) and other subjects. The questions of this survey are not just concerned with general opinions and attitudes towards integration, rather they try to refer to the actual educational behaviour of the teachers. Based on the results of this survey the presentation will discuss further research in which qualitative research methods with teachers of different professions and provenances will be applied.
