Contribution

A starting point for this paper is education as part of a social system communicating about the making of "the reasonable child or citizen". In this paper we are presenting and analysing what can be considered as an information system dealing with students' school careers in this respect in Sweden. We begin with a short introduction on the Swedish education organisation including recent demands on performance and choice. This is based on information systems for governing as well as choice. We have done "communication ethnographies" of these information systems in a Swedish region. Then we turn to information in professional communication systems on students and their progress in the transition from lower to upper secondary school. Our results show different ways of constructing students by means of their performances and choices. These results are discussed in terms of governance implications in an education system.
