Contribution
The UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development represents a global initiative, and several regional processes have been established within the Decade. Among such examples there is the UNECE Strategy for ESD which involves not only all European countries, but also sub-region of Central Asia (CA). The contribution aims to consider a case of these countries as a specific example in using indicators which were developed for monitoring of the UNECE Strategy for ESD. Material is based on experience in working with the Central Asian Regional Environmental Centre (CAREC) in several projects. Five CA countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Tadjikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan) have common environmental and sustainable development initiatives at the state level and, particularly, good cooperation of governmental and no-governmental organizations in environmental education. It is common, that ESD should be integrated into existing education system and adjusted to specific conditions of the country. On the other hand, a main challenge in implementing the UNECE Strategy in the CA countries was to define clearly the difference between traditional environmental education and ESD and to decide what should be done differently at the state (administration), school, HE, and NGO level. According to an experience of CA countries, a set of criteria and indicators as a reference point is helpful in transforming of strategy principles and implications into more “practical” language. Open method of coordination seems to be a useful tool for that. Preparation of the national ESD assessment reports starting since 2006 and sharing examples of good practice provides an insight how one or another ESD aspect may look like when implemented in specific conditions. It provokes discussions towards ESD quality issues both at the national and sub-regional level, and annual CA conferences provide a space for self-assessment and learning from each other as well as for defining future guidelines.
