Contribution
This paper illustrates an iterative approach to portraiture that results from ongoing dialogue with participants in case study schools in the state of NSW, Australia. In the first example, the participants were the group of leaders who were attempting to shift the focus of their leadership from supporting the wellbeing of both students and teachers towards a stronger emphasis on student learning through targeted professional development. In the second case, the participants were a mixture of classroom teachers and faculty leaders who had developed an approach to teaching and learning that emphasised the transfer of knowledge and skills across key learning areas. The data collection processes were developed in collaboration with the participants and suited the nature of redesign that emerged as a priority during conversations in each school. The intent was to maximise the usefulness of the data for both research and redesign purposes. The iterative and collaborative nature of this approach recognises the fragility of the sites and the need for research in challenging circumstances to provide local participants, as well as researchers, with really useful information.
