Contribution
The notion of The Knowledge Society connects two notions into one phenomenon. If we trace the notion of society, its conceptual appearance in the French Enlightenment was concerned with abstract set of relations through which cultural theses were generated about modes of living. Knowledge was the technology through which individuality was linked with collective belonging and home (the state, society as civil society and the citizen). This historical link made possible the science of wealth, notions of markets and the economic individual.
The paper interrogates the principles that order the cultural theses about modes of living embodied in The Knowledge Society. It is to make visible limits of the systems of reason that underlie its principles of governing. European educational policy texts and research are examined by asking, first, about the principles generated about what is (and to be) known and how that knowing is to occur; and the connection of the individual agent to collective belonging (society). Second, processes of abjection are examined. That is, there is an irony and paradox of the emancipatory Enlightenment project in that the cosmopolitan modes of living to emancipate embodied a comparativeness that registered fears of the dangers and dangerous populations to the progress of the future. The double qualities of hope and fear will be examined in EU and US policy and research documents related to the Knowledge Society.
