Contribution
Knowledge society or information society – often equivocally used – are (self-)descriptions of a society by social fractions within this society. Knowledge and information, however, can be distinguished not only epistemologically as different concepts, but also as concepts preferred by particular social groups. For example: the one is more related to technology and management, the other one focuses upon key concepts, smart interpretations and visions based on a theoretically informed, literate background. The paper relates such distinctions to two theoretical concepts of socialization and organisation of education that relate to the governance of education. The first one is Bourdieu’s concept of ‘habitus’, which could explain the different imaginations of information/knowledge society through socialisation and habitus formation of the respective social groups. It also could explain the different methodological and political fractions of educational researchers. The second one is the organisational theory of educational institutions as loosely coupled systems, which could explain the educational contribution to the degree of persistence of reproduction of these habitus. It also could explain the boom of visions on ‘new education’ as a pathway for upper class children to escape from the information to the knowledge society.
